Non-gynaecological cytology (exfoliative cytology)

Exfoliative cytology covers all organ parts that can be accessed for cytological investigation purposes by means of smears, aspiration or the excretion of fluid:

  • Sputum
  • Bronchial secretions, bronchial lavages, BAL
  • Smears from skin and mucosal surfaces
  • Aspirated fluids (pleura, ascites, joints)
  • Urine
  • Irrigation fluids from the bladder/urinary tract
  • Mammary secretions
  • CSF
